The answer to the question “Should I be baptized?” depends on who is asking, and who is asked. Answers will vary according to family tradition, religious persuasion and personal feelings. This little effort is to help you decide if you are a candidate for baptism according to the teachings of the Bible.
Who is to be baptized?
In the Bible only saved people were baptized. Those who were “born again” by the Spirit of God. No infants were baptized in the Bible and no unbelievers. On those who “gladly received his Word” were baptized, Acts 2:41. Only those who believe in Jesus with all their heart may be baptized. Acts 8:37-38.
Why should I be baptized?
If you are a Christian, your baptism is a public declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Matt.10:32 Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist to give an example for all believers to follow. Matt.3:14-15 Baptism is the picture of our salvation. It is “the answer of a good conscience toward God.” 1 Peter 3:21
How should I be baptized?
Believers in the Christ of the Bible should be baptized by immersion. Romans 6:1-4 Only by immersion do we participated in a burial and resurrection which identifies us with the burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This shows that we have died to sin and we intend to walk in a new obedient live in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17
What are the benefits of baptism?
Baptism shows that we have a “good conscience towards God.” 1 Peter 3:21 and that we are not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Mark 8:38 It is the outward expression of an inward experience. Baptism is the doorway to membership of the local church. Acts 2:47
Who is to baptize me?
The church is commissioned to preach the gospel in all the world, to every creature and to baptize those who receive the gospel message. Matt. 28:18-20 It is therefore necessary to be baptized upon the authority of Jesus Christ through the local church.
Many churches claim to believe the Bible, but they mix salvation with works. Believer’s Baptism is for those who have been saved and know it. 1 John 5:11-13 Sprinkling and pouring do not qualify as the right method. Neither does full immersion if it is administered by anyone who does not believe in eternal security. Romans 6:23
Am I “born again” when I am baptized?
Being born again is an operation that the Lord performs in your heart by faith. Colossians 2:12 The water birth spoken of in John Chapter 3 is physical birth. Jesus is simply explaining to Nicodemus that you must have a “physical birth” to be a human being and you must have a “spiritual birth” to be a spiritual being. John 3:5-7
